The Deleted Armoury

article by Ben Lincoln

While the various deleted Reavers are the most well-known, there were many other weapons modified or removed entirely from Soul Reaver before its release.

Some of the most potentially interesting from a gameplay perspective are the flamethrower and crossbow wielded by the human vampire hunters. Early versions of the game allowed Raziel to pick them up, although it does not appear that a way to fire them was incorporated before they were made unusable.

A handful of screenshots depict Raziel's Soul Reaver as remaining in the shape of a ghostly sword, rather than being transformed into a simple spike attached to his arm. This change has been explained as required due to the limited gaming hardware of the era, and the Reaver regained its original design in Defiance.

Numerous melee weapons visible in prerelease images are unavailable in the retail game, among them the knives and staves of the vampire-worshipping humans. The giant dart of The Lighthouse Demo also seems to have appeared frequently in early versions of Soul Reaver. In the retail game, there is only one, hidden in Dumah's "Ash City".
