Hacking the PC Version

The PC version of Blood Omen 2 includes a plaintext configuration called game.erg in the "data" subfolder of the installation directory. It can be edited with a text editor (such as Windows' notepad.exe) to cheat or enable special features.

To enable a feature with a true/false setting (such as "kain's invulnerable", make sure it doesn't have a dash at the beginning and that the number at the end is 1. To disable it, the number should be zero.

The most useful changes to make are:

• Remove the dash from "-BO2 Kain Debug Flags\kain's invulnerable", which makes Kain invincible.
• Change the 1 in "Debug Common\Draw UI"=1 to 0 to disable drawing of the UI ( for the Bonus Mode)
• Change the level/area value in Level="slums/sl01" from "slums/sl01" to something else from the area list which controls where the players starts in the game. This is an alternate, non-savegame method of starting in the Bonus Mode room, for example.

The easiest way to do this is to use the Blood Omen 2 Control Station, which also allows many other options to be set. A future article will discuss the technical details of the various flags.
