The Stahlberg Resistance

article by Ben Lincoln

In the early build of Blood Omen from 12 July, 1996, the Nemesis-occupied town of Stahlberg includes at least two homes with dead Nemesis soldiers inside. Both locations also have living, armed citizens inside. No such locations are present in the final version of the game. It is unclear whether this was an intentional implication that some citizens were fighting back[1], or a graphical glitch caused by replacing map tiles - the soldiers are surrounded by dirt, which could either represent an eventual resting place beneath the floorboards, or be due to the map tiles being those of an outdoor battlefield, accidentally included in these two rooms.

Footnotes
1. The game features several allusions to World War II, such as the Nazi-style banners on villains' castles, so it doesn't seem unlikely that it might have also contained a reference to e.g. the French resistance earlier in its creation.
