Japanese Releases
article by Ben Lincoln
Blood Omen was released for the Playstation in Japan under the name Kain the Vampire. The name and packaging seem to be intended to attract fans of the Castlevania series.
The game is dubbed into Japanese, but the gameplay is identical. Unlike other versions, the manual includes bios of the main characters with colour pictures.
The Japanese version of Soul Reaver 2 (or, in Romaji, "Souru Riibaa 2") for the Playstation 2 also plays identically to the US release except for being dubbed into Japanese. However, most of the bonus material is not present. The menu section which contains it was renamed "Introduction" and includes the introductory FMVs for both Soul Reaver games as well as a "Soul Reaver Recap" built from clips of the first game in order to introduce new gamers to the story. It also displays a warning about the in-game violence while starting up.
The Japanese Soul Reaver 2 manual is printed in full colour, and has biographies of all the characters. Strangely, the credits section only includes the localization team and not the Crystal Dynamics staff members who actually developed the game (although a few are mentioned in the "thanks" section).
These games were gifts from the extremely gracious Sarah.
Posters for both titles are featured in Marketing Material.
