Additional Crypt Dungeons

article by Ben Lincoln

At least three crypt dungeons similar to Kain's mausoleum were deleted from the game less than four months before release.

These areas are present in the build of the game from 12 July, 1996, and are located in the same cemetery as the mausoleum.

In the final version of the game, the entire middle crypt building has been removed, and the entrances of the remaining buildings redirected.

A common theme in all three deleted crypt dungeons is the use of unforgiving one-time "turnstyle" obstacles. These have a similar appearance to a few that remain in the final version of the game, but in the earlier build, these gates can only be toggled once. If the player fails to explore the dungeons in the correct manner, they will lose the opportunity to obtain several health and magic upgrades. Only restoring a savegame from prior to the attempt at the dungeons will permit another try.

Some elements of these deleted dungeons were repurposed to create the different crypt dungeons in the final version of the game. The original, deleted dungeons occupied maps 7, 8, and 9 in the earlier build, while the repurposed elements are in map 13 in the final version of the game.
